In short
Southern Laos fits neatly into eight days from Pakse with no leg longer than about three and a half hours. Spend two days on the Bolaven Plateau, a night in Champasak for an early visit to Vat Phou, two or three nights on the 4,000 Islands, and return to Pakse.
Illustrative, not a packageThis is a realistic sequence to adapt. Transport times are approximate, and nothing on this page is booked or confirmed. A proposal confirms the route, providers and prices for your dates.

How this route is built
An illustrative itinerary to adapt, not a package. The south is compact, so this route can be relaxed: the longest day is the return from the islands. A private car makes the plateau and Champasak days flexible; shared minivans work well for the islands if you prefer.
What still needs arranging
The car for the plateau and Champasak, and rooms on the islands in the busiest weeks. Everything else can be arranged nearer the time.
The transfers, leg by leg
Pakse to Bolaven Plateau
Paksong to Tad Lo
Tad Lo to Champasak
Champasak to Si Phan Don
Si Phan Don to Pakse
Times are approximate ranges for normal dry-season conditions, including stops. Road works, rain, departure times and how full a vehicle is all change them. A proposal states the plan for your dates.
Start and end
Starts and ends in Pakse, with its airport and the Vang Tao border to Thailand nearby.
Book ahead
- Car and driver for days 2 to 5, or a mix of day tour and minivans
- Champasak rooms around the February festival
- Your flight from Pakse
Variations
- Six days: skip Tad Lo and do the plateau as a day trip from Pakse.
- Ten days: add a second night in Champasak and a night on Don Khong.
