The short version

Both regions are known for loops that most travelers ride, and both can be done without riding. The difference is effort. The Bolaven waterfalls are under an hour from Pakse on a paved road. Kong Lor is several hours from Thakhek and is best with a night in the village.

Choose Thakhek and Kong Lor if

  • caves and karst are what you came for,
  • you are already travelling south from Vientiane,
  • you do not mind a few long road days with a driver.

Choose the Bolaven Plateau if

  • you want waterfalls and cooler air with little driving,
  • you are also visiting Champasak and the 4,000 Islands,
  • you prefer to use Pakse as a comfortable base.

Which is better for families?

The Bolaven Plateau: shorter drives and easy waterfall stops. Kong Lor works for families too, but the boat trip involves wet steps and the drives are long.
