Questions travelers ask
Planning with us
What does Laos Explore do?
We plan motorbike-free routes through Laos, check them with local providers, and set everything out in a written proposal. If you accept, we handle the booking and stay your contact. Local drivers, boat operators, guides and accommodation deliver the services.
Are you a tour operator?
No. We plan routes and handle bookings. The services in your trip are delivered by local providers, and your proposal names each of them.
Which parts of Laos do you cover?
Our focus is Thakhek and Kong Lor, Pakse with the Bolaven Plateau, Champasak and the 4,000 Islands, and Nong Khiaw with Muang Ngoi, plus Vientiane and Luang Prabang as gateways. Ask about anywhere else and we will say honestly whether we can help.
How quickly will you reply?
We aim to reply by email within two working days.
Do you have a phone or WhatsApp number?
Not at the moment. Email is how we plan trips, so there is a written record of everything agreed. Your confirmed plan includes the contacts for each leg of your trip.
Quotes, payment and cancellation
Is planning free?
Yes. Questions, route suggestions and proposals are free and create no obligation.
When is my trip booked?
Only when you accept a written proposal and pay the prepayment. We then confirm each service with its provider and send you confirmation.
Who do I pay?
You pay the prepayment to Laos Explore to secure the booking. Where your proposal says so, a balance is paid locally to the provider, in the amount and at the time stated. Together they make up the total price in your proposal.
What if I cancel?
If you cancel your booking, your prepayment is refunded. The cancellation policy has the details, and any conditions specific to your trip are stated in the proposal before you pay.
What if a provider cannot deliver?
We tell you as soon as we know, and offer a suitable alternative or refund your prepayment for the affected service.
Travel and transport
Can I really see Kong Lor without a motorbike?
Yes. The usual way is a car with a driver from Thakhek or Vientiane and a night in Kong Lor village. Public buses also go, with changes and few departures.
Do I need a private driver for everything?
No. Trains, flights, boats and shared minivans work well on many legs. We suggest a driver only where it saves real time or uncertainty.
Are journey times on the site exact?
No. They are approximate ranges for normal dry-season conditions. Road works, rain and departure times change them. Your proposal states the plan for your dates.
Is Laos safe to travel?
The main risk for visitors is road travel, especially on motorbikes. Unexploded ordnance means staying on paths in rural areas. Our safety guide covers the practical points, and your government’s travel advice is the authority.

Tell us where you want to go, not how to get there
Share your dates, the places on your list and how you feel about motorbikes. We reply by email with a realistic route, and when you are ready, a written proposal with transfers, prices, inclusions and who provides each part of the trip.
