Thakhek and Kong LororBolaven Plateau
Choose Thakhek and Kong Lor for caves, limestone towers and a sense of remoteness, at the cost of longer drives. Choose the Bolaven Plateau for waterfalls, coffee and cooler air close to Pakse, with short, easy transfers. Without a motorbike, the Bolaven Plateau is simpler; Kong Lor is more distinctive but needs a driver and an overnight.
Nong KhiaworMuang Ngoi
Stay in Nong Khiaw if you want viewpoint hikes, more choice of rooms and food, and easy road access. Stay in Muang Ngoi for a car-free village, walks to caves and villages, and a slower pace. If you have four or five days, do both: Nong Khiaw first, then an hour upriver to Muang Ngoi.

Use shared transport and trains where they run often and directly: Vientiane to Luang Prabang by train, Pakse to the 4,000 Islands by minivan. Use a private driver where shared options are sparse or need changes (Kong Lor, the loop roads), for multi-stop days, and when three or four of you can split the cost.

Riding gives you freedom and the open-air experience, at low cost, if you are an experienced rider with the right licence and insurance. A car with a driver sees the same main sights with less risk and effort, at higher cost. If you do not already ride confidently, or your insurance would not cover you, take the driver.

Plan it yourself if you are flexible, comfortable with buses and local arrangements, and enjoy the logistics. Coordinated planning helps most when your dates are fixed, you do not ride, you want drivers or boats arranged in advance, or you want one written plan with clear prices and contacts.
