Best time to visit Laos for a motorbike-free route
When to visit Laos for Kong Lor, the Bolaven Plateau and the Nam Ou: dry and rainy seasons, heat, haze, waterfalls, river levels and holiday weeks.

In short
November to February is the most comfortable time for a route through Laos: dry, cooler and with good road conditions. October and early March also work well. March to May is hot and often hazy in the north, and the rainy season from roughly May or June to October brings full waterfalls but slower roads and possible flood suspensions at Kong Lor.
Season by season
| Months | Conditions | Good for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| November to February | Dry, warm days, cool nights (cold mornings in the north) | Everything; best road conditions | Busiest and priciest weeks around the end of the year |
| March to May | Hot, dry; haze in the north from field burning | Kong Lor (low water), the south early in the day | Heat, poor views in the north, Pi Mai in April |
| June to August | Rainy season | Green landscapes, full waterfalls | Slower roads, slippery trails, Kong Lor flood suspensions |
| September to October | Rains easing | Waterfalls at their peak, fewer visitors | Some roads still slow in September |
By destination
- Kong Lor and Thakhek: November to April is reliable. In the wettest months, boat trips can be suspended when the river floods.
- Bolaven Plateau: waterfalls are fullest from the late rains into the early dry season, roughly September to November. December brings dust on unpaved roads.
- Nong Khiaw and Muang Ngoi: clear, cool months from November to February give the best viewpoint mornings. Expect haze in March and April.
- Champasak and the islands: comfortable from November to February; hot from March. The Vat Phou festival in February is lively and busy.
Whatever the month, we check current conditions for your dates before anything is confirmed.
Questions travelers ask
Is the rainy season a bad time to go?
Not necessarily. Showers are often short, landscapes are green and the waterfalls are at their best. The trade-offs are slower roads, slippery trails and the chance that Kong Lor boat trips are suspended during floods. The UK government notes that heavy rain can cause flooding and landslides.
When is Kong Lor best?
The dry season, November to April. Early in that window the water is higher and the boat ride smoother; by late March and April the river can be shallow enough that you step out over sandbanks.
What about Lao New Year?
Pi Mai in mid-April is a big, joyful holiday with water throwing in the streets. Transport and rooms fill up and some services pause, so book early or plan around it.
