Planning guide

How many days do you need in Laos without a motorbike?

What fits in 5, 8, 12 and 14 days in Laos when you travel by car, train, boat and plane: realistic combinations of the north, Kong Lor and Thakhek, and the far south.

The mountains around Nong Khiaw, Luang Prabang Province

In short

Without a motorbike, plan around one region per week. Five days covers Nong Khiaw and Muang Ngoi from Luang Prabang, or Kong Lor and Thakhek from Vientiane. Eight days covers the far south from Pakse. Twelve days links Kong Lor and the south by road; two weeks links the north and south with a domestic flight.

Why transfers set the pace

Distances in Laos look small on a map, but roads are slow: Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw is about 140 km and three to four hours. Without a motorbike, you also depend on vehicle departure times or a driver’s schedule. A route that moves every day spends much of the trip in transit. Two nights in most places is the rhythm that works.

What fits

Days Suggested scope Example
4 to 5 One cluster Thakhek and Kong Lor or Nong Khiaw and Muang Ngoi
7 to 8 The far south Southern Laos in 8 days
10 to 12 Centre and south by road 12 days without a motorbike
14 North and south, with a flight Two weeks, north and south
18 to 21 All three clusters Combine the north with the 12-day route

Arrival and departure days

Count the arrival and departure days as travel days, and leave a buffer before international flights, especially after a long road or boat leg.

Questions travelers ask

Can I see all three focus areas in two weeks?

Only by spending a lot of time on the road. Kong Lor alone takes about three days from Vientiane. We usually suggest two of the three in two weeks, and all three in about three weeks.

What about Luang Prabang and Vientiane?

Add two nights for Luang Prabang and one for Vientiane, as arrival and departure points. They are not counted as separate weeks.
