Illustrative itinerary, 12 days
Central and southern Laos without a motorbike: 12 days
An illustrative 12-day route from Vientiane to Kong Lor, Thakhek, Pakse, the Bolaven Plateau, Champasak and the 4,000 Islands, with every transfer by car, boat or plane.
Khone Phapheng falls on the Mekong, Si Phan Don
In short
This route covers the two famous motorbike areas, Kong Lor and the Bolaven Plateau, plus Vat Phou and the 4,000 Islands, using a driver for the long central legs and short transfers in the south. It has three long road days, all placed early in the day, and ends with a buffer before your flight from Pakse.
Illustrative, not a packageThis is a realistic sequence to adapt. Transport times are approximate, and nothing on this page is booked or confirmed. A proposal confirms the route, providers and prices for your dates.

How this route is built
This is an illustrative itinerary: a realistic sequence we can adapt, not a fixed package or a confirmed booking. Times and arrangements are confirmed for your dates in a written proposal.
The route runs north to south because Vientiane is the easiest arrival point and Pakse has flights out. It front-loads the long drives while you are fresh, spends two nights in most places, and finishes with the least demanding stops. The driver does the heavy lifting in the centre, where public transport is thin; in the south, distances are short and easy to arrange.
What still needs arranging
The car and driver for the central legs, the Kong Lor overnight and your flight from Pakse are the parts to book ahead. Bolaven, Champasak and the islands have more accommodation choice, though February can be busy in Champasak.
The transfers, leg by leg
Vientiane to Kong Lor
The longest drive; leave early.
Kong Lor to Thakhek
After the morning boat.
Thakhek to Pakse
Via Savannakhet.
Pakse to Bolaven Plateau
Short days from here on.
Champasak to Si Phan Don
Si Phan Don to Pakse
Times are approximate ranges for normal dry-season conditions, including stops. Road works, rain, departure times and how full a vehicle is all change them. A proposal states the plan for your dates.
Start and end
Starts in Vientiane (airport, Friendship Bridge or Khamsavath station) and ends in Pakse with an onward flight. Arrival and departure days are travel days, not sightseeing days.
Book ahead
- Private car and driver for days 2 to 5
- Kong Lor overnight (simple rooms, limited choice)
- Domestic or international flight from Pakse
- Accommodation in Champasak around the February temple festival
Variations
- Short on time: fly Vientiane to Pakse and skip Kong Lor and Thakhek (8 days).
- Extra day: add a second night at Kong Lor or a night on the Nakai plateau.
- Ending in Cambodia: continue from Si Phan Don across the border instead of returning to Pakse, after checking the current border rules.
Questions travelers ask
Can I do this route by bus instead of with a driver?
Most legs, yes, except that Kong Lor by bus needs extra time and changes. A common compromise is a driver for Vientiane to Thakhek via Kong Lor, then buses or shared minivans in the south.
Why not go straight from Kong Lor to Pakse?
It would be well over nine hours on the road in one day. A night in Thakhek splits it, and adds the caves near town.
