Getting around Laos without a motorbike

How to travel between Laos destinations without riding: the railway, domestic flights, VIP buses, minivans, songthaews, boats and private drivers.

A songthaew (shared pickup) in Pakse

In short

Laos has more transport options than its reputation suggests. Use the train between Vientiane and Luang Prabang, domestic flights to reach the south, VIP buses and shared minivans on main highways, boats on the Nam Ou and around the 4,000 Islands, and a private car with driver where public transport thins out.

The options at a glance

Mode Where it works best Watch for
Train Vientiane, Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang Tickets sell out on busy dates; stations outside towns
Domestic flight Vientiane or Luang Prabang to Pakse Schedules change by season
VIP and sleeper buses Route 13: Vientiane, Thakhek, Savannakhet, Pakse Slow, arrive at out-of-town bus stations
Shared minivans Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw, Pakse to the islands Leave when full; cramped with luggage
Songthaews Short local trips between villages Irregular; basic
River boats Nong Khiaw to Muang Ngoi, island crossings Timetables and minimum passenger numbers
Private car with driver Kong Lor, loop roads, multi-stop days Cost, unless shared

How to combine them

Good routes use the fast links for the long distances and slow down where the scenery is. A typical motorbike-free trip might take the train north, a minivan or car to Nong Khiaw, a boat to Muang Ngoi, then fly south and use a car for the Bolaven Plateau. Each leg is chosen on time, comfort and reliability, not on a single rule.

Driving after dark

Road conditions, unlit vehicles and animals on the road make night driving riskier in Laos, and the UK government advises that driving after dark greatly increases the risk of accidents. Our plans schedule long road days to finish in daylight.

Do I need to drive myself?

Driving yourself requires an International Driving Permit, according to UK government advice. For most visitors a car with a local driver is simpler. See private drivers in Laos.

Questions travelers ask

Are VIP buses comfortable?

They are the better class of long-distance bus on Route 13, with reclining seats; overnight sleeper buses have berths. They are cheap and run daily, but they are slower than a car and arrive at bus stations outside town centres.

What is a songthaew?

A pickup truck with two benches in the back, used as a local bus. They link villages and smaller towns, leave when full and are the most basic option.

Can I book everything online?

Some things, such as train tickets through the official app and flights. Many local transfers, boats and minivans are booked at stations, through guesthouses or with local agencies.
