Private driver costs in Laos: what sets the price
What sets the cost of a car or van with driver in Laos: distance, days, vehicle, fuel, the empty return and overnights, with a sourced reference price.
A village in Khammouane Province
In short
There is no single rate for a private driver in Laos. The price depends mainly on distance and road type, the number of days, the vehicle size, and whether the driver has to return empty or stay overnight. Published day-trip rates in Pakse start around US$55 per vehicle, while multi-day trips through central Laos cost considerably more. A written quote fixes the figure for your route.
What goes into the price
- Distance and road type. Highways are faster than mountain roads, so time on the road matters as much as kilometres.
- Number of days. Multi-day trips include the driver’s time while you sightsee.
- Vehicle. A sedan for two, an SUV or minivan for more people or luggage.
- Empty return. If the trip ends far from the driver’s base, the return journey is usually included.
- Driver’s overnight costs. Meals and a room for the driver on multi-day trips, if not built in.
- Fuel, tolls and parking. Usually included in a quoted price, but confirm it.
- Season. Rates can rise around holidays and in the busiest months.
Reference price
Prices for drivers are rarely published in Laos. One local operator in Pakse publishes private Bolaven Plateau day trips starting at US$55 per vehicle for up to six people, with pickup and return in Pakse. It is a single example from the provider’s own website, shown for scale. It is not a quote from us, and Laos Explore has no arrangement with that provider.
How quotes work with us
We ask the local provider for a written price for your exact route and dates, then include it in your proposal with everything it covers and excludes. The total you see is the total you pay, split into a prepayment to us and any balance paid locally, as stated. See pricing and quotes.

Questions travelers ask
Why does a one-way transfer cost almost as much as a return?
The driver usually has to drive the car back. A one-way trip from Vientiane to Kong Lor, for example, means the driver returns to base, so the price reflects both directions. Routes that end where another booking starts can sometimes avoid this.
Are tips expected?
Tipping is not obligatory in Laos, but drivers on multi-day trips appreciate a tip for good service. It is your choice and never part of our price.
Is a cheaper driver always worse?
Not necessarily, but a very low price can mean an older vehicle, a driver working very long hours or costs added later. That is why a proposal should list exactly what is included.
