What to confirm before paying for transport in Laos
A checklist for any Laos transfer, driver, boat or tour before you pay: provider, vehicle, route, inclusions, timing, payment and cancellation.

In short
Before paying for any driver, boat or tour in Laos, get in writing who is providing the service, the vehicle and route, exactly what the price includes, the start time and what happens if plans change, how and when you pay, the cancellation terms, and the contact for the day. That applies whether you book with us or anyone else.
The checklist
- Provider. Who is actually delivering the service, and how to contact them. A reseller should name the operator.
- Vehicle or boat. Type, number of seats, luggage space, air conditioning, life jackets for boats.
- Route and stops. Start and end points, the stops included, and whether detours cost extra.
- Timing. Pickup time and place, expected arrival, what happens if the day runs long.
- Inclusions. Fuel, tolls, parking, the driver’s meals and room, entry fees, boat fares, a guide.
- Exclusions. What you pay separately, and roughly how much.
- Total price and currency. One figure, with the currency, and whether it is per person or per vehicle.
- Payment. Deposit or prepayment, the balance, when each is due, how to pay and to whom.
- Cancellation. What happens if you cancel, if the provider cancels, or if weather or a flood stops the trip.
- Contact on the day. A phone or messaging contact for the driver or operator.
Red flags
A price that changes after you arrive, a request for your passport as a deposit, no named provider, or no written terms. Walk away or ask for clarification before you pay.
Questions travelers ask
Does Laos Explore follow this checklist?
Yes. Our written proposals cover each of these points for every service in your trip. If anything is missing or unclear, ask before you accept.
Should I leave my passport as a deposit?
No. The UK government advises never to leave your passport as a deposit or guarantee when hiring motorbikes, and the same caution applies to any rental.
Sources and checks
Time-sensitive details on this page (fees, journey times, schedules, entry rules) were last checked against the sources below on 11 October 2026. Laos transport changes often, so a written proposal always reconfirms them for your dates.
Tell us where you want to go, not how to get there
Share your dates, the places on your list and how you feel about motorbikes. We reply by email with a realistic route, and when you are ready, a written proposal with transfers, prices, inclusions and who provides each part of the trip.
