Laos train tickets: how to book the Laos-China Railway
How to buy Laos-China Railway tickets between Vientiane, Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang: the 7-day sales window, the app, ticket offices, passports and backups.
First-class seating on a Vientiane to Luang Prabang train (2022)
In short
Domestic tickets on the Laos-China Railway go on sale seven days before departure, through the official LCR Ticket app, station counters or ticket offices in Vientiane and Luang Prabang. Every passenger needs a passport, popular morning trains can sell out quickly in peak season, and stations are 30 to 60 minutes from the town centres.
When tickets go on sale
For domestic journeys inside Laos, tickets are released seven days before the departure date; a 2026 guide reports sales opening at 06:30 in the morning. A return journey is bought separately, within its own seven-day window. Cross-border tickets to China open earlier.
That window shapes how you plan. You can fix your route weeks ahead, but you cannot hold train seats until a week before each leg. Keep at least one alternative time in mind for each train day.
Where to buy
| Channel | How it works | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| LCR Ticket app (iOS, Android) | Shows availability and schedules; issues a QR e-ticket | Foreign cards do not always work; screenshot the QR code |
| Town ticket offices | In central Vientiane and Luang Prabang, open office hours | Service fee per ticket; a limit on tickets per person has been reported |
| Station counters | At every station | Cash; stations are far from town, so this suits same-day purchases poorly |
| Agents | Some agents and booking sites resell tickets | They cannot issue tickets before sales open; seats are not guaranteed |
On the day
- Get there early. Stations are 30 to 60 minutes from the Vientiane and Luang Prabang centres. Allow at least 30 minutes before departure with a ticket, and much longer if you still need to buy or print one.
- Passports. Names and passport numbers are tied to tickets; carry your passport.
- Security. Pocket knives (including Swiss Army knives), aerosols such as spray sunscreen or deodorant, and flammable items are confiscated at the scanner.
- Luggage. Fast trains have small overhead racks and some space near the doors; large suitcases are awkward.
- Keep your ticket. It is checked again at the exit.
How this affects your itinerary
Put train legs where a missed or sold-out train causes the least damage: not on the same day as an international flight, and not as the only way to reach a booked overnight. The 9-day northern route shows one way to do it.

Times are approximate ranges for normal dry-season conditions, including stops. Road works, rain, departure times and how full a vehicle is all change them. A proposal states the plan for your dates.
Questions travelers ask
Can I buy tickets more than a week ahead?
Not for domestic trains, according to current guides. Agent websites may take orders earlier, but the ticket itself is only issued once sales open seven days before departure, and seats are not guaranteed. Cross-border tickets to China open further ahead.
Does the app accept foreign cards?
The app lists international Visa, UnionPay, Alipay and WeChat Pay, but travelers report that foreign Visa cards do not always work. Town ticket offices take cash and some local payment methods; stations take cash.
Can Laos Explore book train tickets for me?
If your trip includes train legs, we plan the route around realistic train times and tell you exactly when sales open for your dates. Whether tickets can be bought on your behalf depends on the current rules and your passport details; we confirm the method in your proposal rather than promise seats.
What if the train is sold out?
Check again close to departure, as returned tickets sometimes reappear. Otherwise the expressway links Vientiane and Vang Vieng in about two hours by car; the road from Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang is much slower than the train.
