The Laos-China Railway in a motorbike-free route

How the Vientiane to Luang Prabang train fits a Laos route: journey times, train types, buying tickets as a foreigner and getting to the stations.

In short

The Laos-China Railway links Vientiane, Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang, with fast trains taking about two hours between the capital and Luang Prabang. It is the best way to cover that leg. Buy tickets as early as sales open, carry your passport, and allow time to reach stations, which are outside the town centres.

Why it matters for route planning

Before the railway opened in December 2021, Vientiane to Luang Prabang meant a long mountain road or a flight. Now it is about two hours on the faster trains, with Vang Vieng in between. For a motorbike-free route, it is the obvious choice for that leg.

The practical details

  • Trains: a 2026 guide lists six daily departures from Vientiane that reach Luang Prabang, with early-morning fast trains among them. Timetables change; check before booking.
  • Classes: first and second class on the faster trains, with assigned seats.
  • Tickets: sold at stations and through the official app. Bring your passport; names must match. Payment options at stations have been reported as limited for foreign cards, so carry kip.
  • Stations: Vientiane and Luang Prabang stations are outside the centre. Taxis and minivans meet trains.

When something else is better

If you are linking Luang Prabang with southern Laos, a domestic flight to Pakse may save more time than the train plus a flight from Vientiane. If you want to stop along the way outside Vang Vieng, a car gives more freedom. Otherwise, take the train.

The transfers, leg by leg

  1. Vientiane to Vang Vieng

    By train about 1 hour

    Most trains stop here.

  2. Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang

    By train about 1 hour

Faster trains do the whole Vientiane run in about 2 hours.

Times are approximate ranges for normal dry-season conditions, including stops. Road works, rain, departure times and how full a vehicle is all change them. A proposal states the plan for your dates.

Questions travelers ask

How do I buy tickets as a foreigner?

At the station ticket office with your passport, or through the official LCR app, which some foreign travelers have found hard to use. Advance sales open a set number of days before departure, and reports differ on how many. Tickets can sell out on busy dates.

Can the train take me to southern Laos?

No. The line runs north from Vientiane. For the south, fly from Vientiane to Pakse or travel by road.

Do I need to arrive early?

Yes. Stations have security and ticket checks, and they are some way from the town centres. Plan to arrive well before departure.
