Northern LaosIllustrative itinerary, 9 days
Vientiane, Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang and the Nam Ou: 9 days by train and road
An illustrative 9-day northern Laos route: train from Vientiane to Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang, Kuang Si at opening, then road and boat to Nong Khiaw and Muang Ngoi.
Karst peaks around Vang Vieng from Mount Nam Xay (June 2020)
In short
The classic first route through northern Laos, without riding: fast trains between Vientiane, Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang, an early morning at Kuang Si, then a private car north to Nong Khiaw and a boat to Muang Ngoi. Train tickets go on sale only 7 days ahead, so the plan protects the train days.
Illustrative, not a packageThis is a realistic sequence to adapt. Transport times are approximate, and nothing on this page is booked or confirmed. A proposal confirms the route, providers and prices for your dates.

How this route is built
An illustrative itinerary to adapt, not a package. The train does the long distances in the north quickly, so the plan spends its time in places rather than on roads. The one slow leg, Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw, is done once in each direction and kept away from the departure day.
The train is the constraint
Domestic train tickets on the Laos-China Railway go on sale exactly seven days before departure, and popular morning trains can sell out quickly in peak season. Every passenger needs a passport to buy. Read Laos train tickets before you fix your dates.
The transfers, leg by leg
Vientiane to Vang Vieng
Fast trains; stations are outside both towns.
Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang
Luang Prabang to Kuang Si Falls
Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw
Nong Khiaw to Muang Ngoi
Muang Ngoi to Luang Prabang
Times are approximate ranges for normal dry-season conditions, including stops. Road works, rain, departure times and how full a vehicle is all change them. A proposal states the plan for your dates.
Start and end
Starts in Vientiane and ends in Luang Prabang. Day 8 brings you back to Luang Prabang so the slow Nong Khiaw road never falls on your departure day.
Book ahead
- Train tickets Vientiane to Vang Vieng and Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang (on sale 7 days ahead, can sell out within minutes in peak season)
- Private car Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw if you want one
- Muang Ngoi rooms in December and January
- Your flight from Luang Prabang
Decide on the spot
- Tuk-tuks around Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang
- Which viewpoint to climb, depending on weather and haze
- Kayaking on the Nam Song, depending on river levels
- The boat to Muang Ngoi, bought at the landing
- Pak Ou caves or a second morning in Luang Prabang
Variations
- Seven days: skip Muang Ngoi and return from Nong Khiaw on day 7.
- Twelve days: add the south by flying from Luang Prabang or Vientiane to Pakse when schedules allow.
- If train tickets for your date are sold out, the expressway from Vientiane to Vang Vieng takes about two hours by car.
Questions travelers ask
What if I cannot get train tickets?
Popular morning trains can sell out quickly in peak season. Have a second train time in mind, and if a train day fails, a car on the expressway reaches Vang Vieng from Vientiane in about two hours. The road from Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang is much slower than the train.
Can I do this in the other direction?
Yes. Flying into Luang Prabang and ending in Vientiane works equally well.
