Northern LaosFull day
Vang Vieng caves and lagoon day without a motorbike
A day around Vang Vieng's caves, the Blue Lagoon and karst viewpoints with a car or tuk-tuk and driver instead of a rented scooter, with honest notes on river safety.
Karst peaks around Vang Vieng from Mount Nam Xay (June 2020)
In short
Vang Vieng's main sights are spread along dirt roads a few kilometres from town, which is why most visitors rent scooters or buggies. Instead, a car or tuk-tuk with driver for the day takes you to the Blue Lagoon and its cave, quieter caves nearby, and back in time for the sunset viewpoint.
Arranged on requestNot an instant booking. We arrange this with a local provider for your date and confirm the provider, vehicle and total price in writing before you pay anything.
How the trip runs
Morning
Blue Lagoon and Tham Poukham
About 7 km west of town: a spring-fed lagoon and a cave above it reached by a short, steep climb with a ladder.
Midday
A quieter cave or a village lunch
Nearby caves such as Nang Oua Kham are less visited; a head torch is included in some entry fees.
Afternoon
Back to town and the river
Time to rest, or a guided kayak trip on the Nam Song in calm conditions.
Late afternoon
Sunset viewpoint
A steep climb of about half an hour to a viewpoint over the valley, for those who want it.
Why a driver here
Vang Vieng is small and walkable, but the lagoons and caves are along rough roads west of the river. Rented scooters and buggies are the default, and traffic on those roads is chaotic. A driver for the day keeps the same freedom to stop, with none of the riding.

Questions travelers ask
Is Vang Vieng worth a stop without a motorbike?
Yes, if you like karst landscapes and caves. It sits on the railway between Vientiane and Luang Prabang, so one or two nights break the journey without extra transfers.
Is tubing included?
No. Tubing is arranged in town by the tubing operators. We do not include it, and the safety notes above apply.
