The processional way at Vat Phou, with the mountain behind

In short

One day by private car from Pakse to Si Phan Don, the 4,000 Islands, with two to three hours at Vat Phou on the way. You see the temple ruins and arrive at the boat landing for Don Det or Don Khon the same afternoon, without backtracking or riding.

Arranged on requestNot an instant booking. We arrange this with a local provider for your date and confirm the provider, vehicle and total price in writing before you pay anything.

How the trip runs

  1. Morning

    Pakse to Champasak

Across the Mekong bridge and south along the west bank, about an hour.

  2. Late morning

    Vat Phou

Two to three hours at the temple complex: the processional way, the lower halls and the stone stairs to the upper sanctuary. A cart covers part of the way from the gate.

  3. Afternoon

    South to Ban Nakasang

About two and a half hours to the landing for Don Det and Don Khon.

  4. Late afternoon

    Boat to the islands

A short boat across to your island guesthouse.

Why combine the two

Most travelers visit Vat Phou as a day trip from Pakse and then make a separate journey south to the islands. Joining them saves a day of backtracking: the temple is roughly on the way, and a private car can wait while you visit.

What to expect at the temple

Vat Phou is a ruined Khmer-style temple complex on a mountainside above the Mekong, part of a World Heritage cultural landscape. The visit is a gradual walk uphill, with the steepest part at the end. Read the Champasak guide for more.

Questions travelers ask

Can we stay in Champasak instead and continue the next day?

Yes, and it is a good choice if you want Vat Phou at opening time. The quote then covers two shorter legs.

Can the car take us onto the islands?

No. Don Det and Don Khon are reached by a short boat from Ban Nakasang; the driver drops you at the landing.
