An illustrative 5-day trip from Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw and Muang Ngoi: road and boat times, viewpoints, walks and getting back in time.

Sunset over the Nam Ou valley from the Pha Daeng viewpoint

In short

From Luang Prabang, five days gives you two nights in Nong Khiaw and two in Muang Ngoi, with a road transfer in and a boat-and-road day out. Plan the return so you are not catching a train or flight from Luang Prabang on the same day you leave Muang Ngoi.

Illustrative, not a packageThis is a realistic sequence to adapt. Transport times are approximate, and nothing on this page is booked or confirmed. A proposal confirms the route, providers and prices for your dates.

How this route is built

An illustrative itinerary, adapted for your dates in a written proposal. The road to Nong Khiaw is the slowest part, so the plan avoids doing it twice in quick succession and keeps the boat legs in the morning.

What still needs arranging

A private car if you want one, and rooms in Muang Ngoi in December and January. Boats are bought locally.

The transfers, leg by leg

  1. Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw

By road about 3 to 4 hours

  2. Nong Khiaw to Muang Ngoi

    By boat about 1 hour

  3. Muang Ngoi to Luang Prabang

By road about 5 to 6 hours including the boat

Times are approximate ranges for normal dry-season conditions, including stops. Road works, rain, departure times and how full a vehicle is all change them. A proposal states the plan for your dates.

Start and end

Starts and ends in Luang Prabang. Keep the night of day 5 in Luang Prabang before any onward train or flight.

Book ahead

  • Private car if you prefer it to the minivan
  • Muang Ngoi rooms in peak season
  • Cash from Luang Prabang for the whole trip
