Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw: road, minivan or car
Since dams ended the Nam Ou boats, Nong Khiaw is reached by road. Minivan or private car, real journey times, where they leave from, and how to continue to Muang Ngoi.
The Nam Ou from the Nong Khiaw bridge
In short
Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw is about 140 km by road and takes around 3 to 4 hours, sometimes much more, because the road is narrow and often damaged. Shared minivans leave from the northern bus station; a private car collects you from your hotel and is a little faster and more comfortable. The scheduled river boats no longer run.
Minivan or private car
Shared minivans leave Luang Prabang’s northern bus station for Nong Khiaw during the day. Departures and fares have changed over the years and vary between reports, so we check them for your dates. Minivans fill up, leave when ready and stop along the way. They are inexpensive and adequate for most travelers.
A private car collects you from your hotel, stops when you want (for photos, a toilet break or lunch) and avoids the bus station. It is the better choice for families, anyone prone to motion sickness in crowded vehicles, and travelers with fixed onward plans.
The road itself
The journey heads north out of Luang Prabang and follows river valleys into the hills. The distance is short, but traveler reports consistently describe a slow, bumpy road with trucks. Leave in the morning so you arrive in daylight.
The river boats that stopped
Older guidebooks describe a boat trip up the Nam Ou from Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw. That scheduled service stopped in late 2013 when hydropower dams were built on the river. Some operators now combine road and river sections around the dams; if that interests you, ask and we will look at what is actually running.

Questions travelers ask
Why does a 140 km trip take four hours?
The road winds through hills, has damaged sections and potholes, and carries heavy trucks. Minivans also stop to pick up and drop off. Treat it as half a day.
Can I reach Muang Ngoi in one day from Luang Prabang?
Usually, if you leave in the morning and connect with an afternoon boat from Nong Khiaw. If the road is slow, you might miss it, so we often add a night in Nong Khiaw.
