How they differ

Nong Khiaw is where the road meets the river. It has the dramatic viewpoint hikes, the bigger choice of places to stay and eat, and the transport connections. Muang Ngoi, an hour upriver, is quieter and car-free, with walking trails into the countryside rather than up to peaks.

Combining them

The most natural plan is Nong Khiaw for two nights after arriving from Luang Prabang, then Muang Ngoi for two nights, then the boat and road back. Bring cash from Luang Prabang for both.

Questions travelers ask

Can I do Muang Ngoi as a day trip from Nong Khiaw?

Technically, if boat times work, but you would miss the point. The village is best in the early morning and evening.
