In short

Four days from Vientiane covers Kong Lor and the caves around Thakhek without riding: drive to Kong Lor on day one, take the cave boat early on day two and continue to Thakhek, spend day three on the Route 12 caves, and leave on day four for Thailand, Pakse or Vientiane.

Illustrative, not a packageThis is a realistic sequence to adapt. Transport times are approximate, and nothing on this page is booked or confirmed. A proposal confirms the route, providers and prices for your dates.

How this route is built

An illustrative itinerary, confirmed for your dates in a written proposal. Kong Lor comes first so the long drive from Vientiane ends at the cave, and you see it early the next morning. Thakhek then gives you a comfortable base and several onward options.

What still needs arranging

The car and driver, and the Kong Lor overnight, where choice is limited. If you plan to cross into Thailand at Nakhon Phanom, check Thailand’s entry rules for your nationality before you go.

The transfers, leg by leg

  1. Vientiane to Kong Lor

By road about 6 to 7 hours

  2. Kong Lor to Thakhek

By road about 3.5 to 4.5 hours

  3. Thakhek to Route 12 caves

By road 20 to 40 minutes each way

Times are approximate ranges for normal dry-season conditions, including stops. Road works, rain, departure times and how full a vehicle is all change them. A proposal states the plan for your dates.

Start and end
