In short

There are three realistic ways to Kong Lor without riding: a private car from Thakhek or Vientiane with one night in the village; local buses and songthaews via Vieng Kham and Na Hin; or a multi-day tour that includes it. For fixed dates and comfort, the car is the clear choice; buses suit flexible travelers on a budget.

The three options

Private car with driver Buses and songthaews Multi-day tour
Time from Thakhek About 3.5 to 4.5 hours Most of a day, with waits Built into the tour
Flexibility Your schedule Departures when vehicles fill Fixed itinerary
Comfort High Basic Varies by operator
Best for Fixed dates, couples, groups Budget, flexible travelers Those who want everything packaged

The car option in practice

Most travelers who do not ride choose a car from Thakhek, or include Kong Lor on the drive south from Vientiane. The pattern that works: arrive in the afternoon, sleep in Kong Lor village, take an early boat when the cave is quiet, and leave by late morning for Thakhek or Vientiane.

The bus option in practice

Buses run north from Thakhek to Vieng Kham, where Route 8 branches off. From there, local transport continues to Na Hin and on to Kong Lor. The trip out is manageable; coming back early in the morning is the harder part. Build in a spare night.

On the day

Bring cash in kip for the cave fee, a head torch, shoes you can get wet and a dry bag. Life jackets should be provided on the boats. In the late dry season, expect to step out over shallow sections while the boatman pushes.

The transfers, leg by leg

Questions travelers ask

What is the lowest-cost way to get there?

Local buses and songthaews. A local agent's January 2024 timetable listed two daily buses from Thakhek to Kong Lor, and the traditional route changes at Vieng Kham and Na Hin. Expect waits, and plan an extra night in case.

Can I go on from Kong Lor to Vientiane the same day as the cave?

Yes, by car: take the early boat, leave around midday and arrive in Vientiane in the evening. Avoid planning it if it would mean driving after dark.
