The Thakhek Loop without a motorbike

How to follow the Thakhek Loop by car with a driver instead of a scooter: the route, how many days, what you see, and what you gain or lose.

On the road east of Thakhek towards the caves

In short

The Thakhek Loop is a circuit of roughly 450 to 500 km from Thakhek through the karst of Khammouane, usually ridden over three or four days. A car with a driver can follow most of it, with overnights near the Nakai plateau and at Kong Lor. If you only want the highlights, a shorter there-and-back trip to Kong Lor covers the main one in two days.

The loop in brief

From Thakhek the loop runs east on Route 12 past caves and river pools, climbs onto the Nakai plateau around the Nam Theun 2 reservoir, continues to the town of Lak Sao, then turns west on Route 8 through limestone country to Na Hin and Kong Lor, before returning south on Route 13. Travel guides describe roads as much improved over the years, with slow sections, heavy trucks on the routes towards Vietnam, and long stretches without fuel stations.

Doing it by car

With a driver, the route works well over three days:

  1. Thakhek to the Nakai plateau, with the Route 12 caves on the way.
  2. Plateau to Kong Lor via Lak Sao and the karst of Route 8, arriving in the afternoon.
  3. Kong Lor boat trip in the morning, then back to Thakhek or onward north to Vientiane.

You lose some of the freedom of a bike: the smallest dirt side-roads and the open-air feeling. You gain comfort, shade, luggage space and a local driver at the wheel, and you avoid the insurance and passport-deposit issues that come with renting.

The shorter version

If your time is limited, skip the eastern half. Drive from Thakhek or Vientiane straight to Kong Lor via Route 13 and Na Hin, spend a night, and return. See the Kong Lor trip.

Accommodation along the way

The plateau and Kong Lor have guesthouses and homestays of a simple standard. We describe the room honestly in your proposal and avoid the places that only work for riders who arrive late and leave early.

The transfers, leg by leg

  1. Thakhek to Nakai plateau (Tha Lang area)

By road about 2 to 3 hours with cave stops

East on Route 12 past the caves, then up onto the plateau.

  2. Nakai plateau to Kong Lor

By road about 4 to 5 hours

Via Lak Sao and Route 8, through the karst to the cave village.

  3. Kong Lor to Thakhek

By road about 3.5 to 4.5 hours

Via Na Hin and Route 13 after the morning boat trip.

Times are approximate ranges for normal dry-season conditions, including stops. Road works, rain, departure times and how full a vehicle is all change them. A proposal states the plan for your dates.

Questions travelers ask

Can I do the loop by public transport?

Parts of it, slowly. Buses and songthaews run on the main roads, but some sections have few departures and you may wait for vehicles to fill. It suits flexible travelers with time, not fixed itineraries.

Which direction is better?

Riders usually go anticlockwise, finishing with the faster Route 13 home. By car the direction matters less; we choose it so Kong Lor falls on a morning and the longest day is not the last.

Is the full loop worth it by car?

If you enjoy landscapes and slow days, yes. If Kong Lor is the main goal, the shortcut via Na Hin gets you there with less driving.
