Bolaven Plateau without a scooter: car, tour or bus

Three ways to see the Bolaven Plateau without renting a scooter: a private car from Pakse, a guided day tour or the bus. What each covers and suits.

Tad Yuang, Bolaven Plateau

In short

From Pakse, a private car with a driver is the most flexible way to see the Bolaven Plateau: Tad Fane, Tad Yuang, a coffee farm and Paksong fit in one day, and an overnight at Tad Lo adds more. Guided day tours cover similar stops at a lower cost with fixed timing. Buses work only for Tad Lo.

Option 1: a private car from Pakse

The plateau’s best-known falls are under an hour from Pakse on a paved road, which makes a car with a driver the simplest way in. A typical day: Tad Fane and Tad Yuang in the morning, a coffee farm, lunch in Paksong, back to Pakse in the late afternoon. Or carry on to Tad Lo for the night and return the next day via other falls.

Option 2: a guided day tour

Agencies in Pakse run day tours in minivans, usually covering Tad Fane, Tad Yuang, a coffee plantation and sometimes Tad Lo and a village. Inclusions vary: some include park fees, some include lunch only for larger groups. Check what is covered before you book.

Option 3: buses

Buses from Pakse’s southern bus station towards Salavan stop at the junction for Tad Lo. That makes Tad Lo reachable without a car, though getting from there to other falls is harder. Elsewhere on the plateau, public transport is infrequent.

Questions travelers ask

Is a tour better than a private car?

A tour is cheaper per person if you are one or two travelers and happy with a fixed day. A private car is better if you want your own timing, fewer stops, a longer lunch, or to end the day somewhere other than Pakse.

Can a driver do the big loop through Sekong and Attapeu?

Yes, over two or three days. Some roads on the wider loop are rougher and slower, and services are fewer. We plan it only if the extra distance matches what you want to see.
