Couples and groups

Laos for couples and small groups

How couples and groups of three to six can travel Laos comfortably: when a shared private car makes sense, rooms in small places, and good routes.

In short

Couples and small groups get the most out of private transport in Laos, because a car is priced per vehicle and split between you. For three or four people, a driver on the slow legs often costs little more per person than tours, and buys time and comfort. The limits are room choice in small villages and vehicle size for luggage.

Why groups favour private transport

A private car’s price does not change much between one and four passengers. Split three or four ways, a driver for Kong Lor or a Bolaven day can be competitive with seats on a tour, and you choose the timing and stops.

What to plan for

  • Rooms: Kong Lor, Muang Ngoi and Tad Lo have small guesthouses. For groups, we check that there are enough rooms of the type you want before proposing them.
  • Vehicles: a sedan suits two, an SUV three or four with luggage, a minivan five or more.
  • Pace: groups move more slowly; two nights per stop keeps everyone comfortable.

Good fits

The southern Laos route works well for groups: short transfers, a car for the plateau and Champasak, and relaxed island days at the end.
