Laos visa and arrival: what matters for your route

Visa on arrival, eVisa and which entry points accept which: why your crossing matters for a route through Thakhek, Pakse or Luang Prabang.

The Mekong at Vientiane

In short

Many nationalities can get a visa on arrival at most international entry points into Laos, and an eVisa is available online, but the eVisa is only valid at nine designated entry points. Some crossings that suit motorbike-free routes, such as the Thakhek bridge from Nakhon Phanom, are not on that list. Check your nationality and crossing on official sources before you book.

Why this matters for route planning

Your entry and exit points shape your route. If you plan to arrive from Thailand at Nakhon Phanom and go straight to Kong Lor, the Third Friendship Bridge at Thakhek is the obvious crossing, but it does not appear on the official eVisa list. Travelers there have reported getting a visa on arrival instead. Equally, the land border at Vang Tao near Pakse is not on the eVisa list, while Pakse airport is.

So we ask how you plan to arrive and leave, and build the route around entry points that work with the visa you intend to use.

The three ways in

  1. Visa on arrival: available to many nationalities at most international checkpoints. Fees are paid in cash, commonly in US dollars, and vary by nationality. Bring passport photos and cash in clean notes.
  2. eVisa: applied for online before travel and valid only at the designated entry points. Travelers report that a printed copy of the approval is expected.
  3. Embassy visa: arranged in advance through a Lao embassy.

Some nationalities have visa exemptions for short stays. Rules, fees and lists change, so treat this page as a planning guide and check official sources for your passport.

Before you go

  • Check that your passport has enough validity and blank pages.
  • Check the entry point you plan to use against the visa you intend to get.
  • Check your own government’s travel advice for Laos, which includes entry requirements.

Questions travelers ask

Which entry points accept the eVisa?

The official Lao eVisa site lists Wattay International Airport (Vientiane), Luang Prabang and Pakse international airports, Lao-Thai Friendship Bridges I, II and IV, Boten checkpoint, Boten railway station and Khamsavath railway station. The list can change, so check it before you apply.

Is there an online arrival form?

Travel guides report that Laos has introduced an online arrival and departure form on the Lao immigration website, completed shortly before travel. Check the official immigration website and your government's travel advice for the current requirement.

Can Laos Explore arrange my visa?

No. We plan routes and arrange travel services, not visas. We do take your entry point into account so the route matches the document you hold.
